Organizations we fund

We fund non-profits working on issues related to vehicle use and climate change. Gas tax members can nominate new organizations anytime. To nomination organizations in any of the following categories, or in a new category, just send e-mail.

Members of VGT decide annually which organizations will receive funding, and what proportion each will receive.

Taxes collected in past years went to the organizations listed below.

Carbon abatement

The Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy works with communities and public and private agencies to develop conservation programs around the world, identifying and protecting the most threatened plants, animals and natural communities
Plant-it 2020
Founded in 1992 by John Denver, Plant-it 2020 is dedicated to properly planting, maintaining and protecting as many indigenous trees as possible worldwide
Trees for the Future
Trees for the Future promotes and supports sustainable land use by planting trees in cooperation with local people in communities around the world by providing seeds, guidelines and onsite supervision

Fuel Efficiency

Rocky Mountain Institute
Rocky Mountain Institute is an entrepreneurial, nonprofit organization that fosters the efficient and restorative use of resources to create a more secure, prosperous, and life-sustaining world. Nominated for its work on Hypercars.
Union of Concerned Scientists
The Union of Concerned Scientists is a nonprofit partnership of scientists and citizens promoting resarch, policy development and citizen advocacy to achieve practical environmental solutions. Nominated for its work on Clean Vehicles.

Institute for Transportation and Development Policy
The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy promotes environmentally sustainable and equitable transportation policies and projects worldwide
Greenbelt Alliance
The Greenbelt Alliance is dedicated to protecting the San Francisco Bay Area's Greenbelt of open space. Greenbelt Alliance has helped save more than 600,000 acres of Greenbelt lands

NWEI programs encourage participants to explore their values, attitudes, and actions through discussion with other people.
